A six-year-old girl and two women have died in a fire in Mitchells Plain, a Cape Town official said on Monday.

A baby boy and another woman were in a critical condition, disaster risk centre spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

The fire started in Tafelsig late on Sunday evening, destroying a house and a backyard dwelling.

Minnie Simmons, 42, Charlene Simmons, six, and Amanda Claasen, 19, died in the blaze.

Christina Lotz, 67, and seven-week-old Nathan Claasen were admitted to hospital with deep burn wounds.

The remaining family members were given food, blankets, clothing, building material, and trauma counselling.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
