Three people have been arrested for allegedly performing unlawful circumcisions in the Mbizana municipality.

Three people have been arrested for allegedly performing unlawful circumcisions in the Mbizana municipality, the Eastern Cape co-operative governance and traditional affairs department said on Tuesday.

Thirty-nine initiates were rescued in Elurholweni village when MEC Fikile Xasa, the Traditional Initiation Forum, police, traditional leaders, and government officials visited two initiation schools in the area on Monday, spokesman Mamnkeli Ngam said in a statement.

The three people arrested would face charges of kidnapping and conducting unlawful circumcisions.

"Some of the rescued initiates were in critical conditions, hence given immediate medical attention by officials from the department of health," he said.

Xasa said the illegal schools had to be closed down as they were putting initiates' lives at risk.

"We had no option rather to close them down and refer the initiates to the rescue centre in Port St Johns for further medical observation," Xasa said in a statement.

"None of the initiates had the required official documentation, including letters from the local traditional leaders, no premedical examination, and no parental consent to undergo the traditional initiation ritual."
