I don't do this alone, says Madonsela.

Public protector Thuli Madonsela is not only a role model for many but she is also loved. Madonsela who is a lawyer by profession was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law from Stellenbosch University recently.

"I see the honour as not necessarily an affirmation of my own personal contribution but that of the collective efforts of each member of the Public Protector team, even those that are not directly involved in investigations. If it were up to me, I'd confer honorary doctorates on all of them," the public protector said about the doctorate.

"These honours indicate to us that a large constituency of the population appreciates what we do. The support encourages us to work harder. However, we do not perform our functions for praise. We see ourselves as privileged to have been afforded the opportunity to contribute towards the strengthening our country's constitutional democracy," she added.

She received another honorary degree in 2013 from Fort Hare University.
