TODAY IN HISTORY: Archibald Gumede is born

Archibald Gumede President of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1983, is born in Pietermaritzburg.

Archibald Archie Gumede was born on 1 March 1914 in Pietermaritzburg.  He went to study at the South African Native College (now University of Fort Hare), but dropped out after two years. He returned to Natal and joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1949 and became secretary of the Natal branch. Gumede was very active in the Natal ANC, leading the delegation to the Congress of the People in Kliptown in 1955 and in the campaigns against the extension of pass laws to women.
