South Africa won the bid in 2004 and became the first African country to host the prestigious tournament

On May 15 2004, President of FIFA Joseph 'Sepp' Blatter announced that South Africa would be hosting the biggest football tournament, the World Cup.

The announcement was made in Zurich where a delegation including Nelson Mandela and Danny Jordaan represented the country.

Mzansi beat contenders Morocco by four votes to become the first African country to host the prestigious event.

The win boosted the country's morale after losing their bid in 2000 against Germany who hosted the tournament in 2006.
