The University of the Free State was founded on 18 March 1950.

The institution began as a small college in what was then the Orange River Colony, called the Grey College School in 1904. By 1907, the college had 29 students and ten lecturers and in 1910 the college was declared an official educational institution in Arts and Sciences.

In 2001, the University was renamed the University of the Free States.
