Top medics to boycott conference

Senior medics have withdrawn from an international medical conference in Johannesburg next month in protest against the detention of local doctor Prof Cyril Karabus, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Times reported that the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Conference, which formed part of Africa Health, was run by the Dubai-based company, Informa Life Exhibitions.

Obstetrician Theo Kopenhager said he recently found this out and had withdrawn in support of Karabus, 78, who has been held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since August on manslaughter charges.

He was acquitted about three weeks ago, but the prosecution has appealed.

"I pulled out in protest.... It's a moral imperative," Kopenhager said.

He told the newspaper another Johannesburg-based, senior gynaecologist had been approached to take his place at the conference, but she had turned down the invitation in protest at Karabus's continued detention.

The conference is scheduled for May 9.

Karabus is expected back in an Abu Dhabi court on April 23.
