Illegal miners trapped underground at an unused mine in Langlaagte (southern Joburg) have been emerging slowly throughout the course of Tuesday morning.

In the early hours of the morning, the body of a deceased miner was brought up and later two miners emerged unharmed.

The two miners complained that they did not see any rescue team despite being trapped close to the exit of the mine.

On Monday, the Mine Rescue Team had decided to put the rescue mission on hold, citing dangerous conditions underground. It was reported that there were seven illegal miners trapped underground before the rescue mission was abandoned.

Distraught and impatient family members had threatened to enter the mine without the assistance of the rescue team amid fears that the illegal miners trapped underground could die.

Sangomas were also present on the scene casting prayers to assist finding the rest of the trapped miners.
