Twitter asks: will Mugabe really go?

Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe’s surprise announcement that he plans to retire has sent a shockwave through social media, with many saying his announcement is a hoax.

In 2014 Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu PF, named Mugabe as their candidate for the 2018 presidential election. However, there has since been speculation about whether he will be able to stand for office as he’s taken constant trips overseas which are suspected to be linked to treatment for ill health.

The 92 year old President has been in office since 1981 and has received much criticism around the world for refusing to step down and find a successor.

In July 2016, there was a revolt by young Zimbabweans who called for Mugabe’s resignation and an urgent intervention in the downward spiral of Zimabwe’s economy. The movement’s leader, Pastor Evan Mawarire, posted a Facebook video calling for reform. The video went viral. #ThisFlag trended on social media and lead to protests that spread amongst Zimbabweans within the country, and those in exile.
