Two Indian sisters ordered to be raped by village council

The council has ordered the sisters to be raped and paraded naked with blackened faces.

A Khap Panchayat - an unofficial village council - in Baghpat village has handed down the punishment to 23-year-old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old sister.

Their crime: their brother eloped with a married woman from a higher caste. Time said that according to reports, the couple was in love and they eloped after the woman was forced to marry someone from her own caste.

Kumari  approached India’s Supreme Court to report police for harassing them instead of protecting them. She is quoted as saying that she and her family “cannot return back to her village and have been rendered homeless.”

Although the councils have been declared illegal by the courts, their edicts are still observed in many parts of rural India, the report said.

A petition by Amnesty International, a human rights organization, to save the sisters from the village ruling is gathering considerable support, now sitting at 150 000 signatures. The petition demands that authorities intervene and stop the “disgusting ruling” in Baghpat village in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh from being enforced.

“Nothing could justify this abhorrent punishment,” the Amnesty petition reads. “It’s not fair. It’s not right. And it’s against the law. Demand that the local authorities intervene immediately.”
