The University of Johannesburg has been experience major problems during the new wave of #FeesMustFall protests. Lecture Hall B3 at UJ’s Bunting campus was on fire today.

The University of Johannesburg has been experience major problems during the new wave of #FeesMustFall protests. At its Science and Engineering campus in Doornfontein, eastern Johannesburg, students entered into an altercation with security guards on Wednesday night for being heavy-handed in their approach to handling students.

On Thursday afternoon, Lecture Hall B3 at UJ’s Bunting campus was on fire but the universities spokesperson, Kaarminy Reddy said it was too soon to tell if it was arson or a technical problem.

The media was barred from entering the lecture hall as emergency services, police tactical response teams and investigators were on the scene to assess the damage and to determine the cause of the fire.

Reddy was asked why security’s approach towards students has been increasingly violent in the last few protests.

“We need to have increased security to protect the building and the students,” she said.

However, she said the university could not justify the manner in which students are being manhandled.

Reddy says the academic programme is continuing at the university.
