A 17-year-old unlicensed driver transporting schoolchildren crashed into a Kempton Park home's lounge yesterday which left him and nine other children hurt.

The Star reports that Eric* was driving children aged between four and twelve to school when the incident occurred,

It is reported that neighbours heard the children screaming before the taxi ploughed through the wall, the homeowner's steel front gate and into her lounge.

"I was preparing for work and I hard a bang. After a few seconds, I heard children screaming..then I saw the dust in the house," the homeowner told the newspaper.

"The children struggled to get out of the taxi. They had to break the door off to pull them out," she said as quoted by the daily.

Eric claims that the taxi's brakes had failed but also denied being the driver of the vehicle at the time the accident happened.

A witness from inside the vehicle confirmed to The Star that Eric was indeed driving the taxi and was travelling at a high speed.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police have told the paper that charges of reckless and negligent driving would be laid against the driver and driving without a license while the taxi owner would be charged with allowing an unlicensed driver to drive a motor vehicle.

According to the report, other charges could be added after an investigation and the reconstruction of the accident scene.
