Three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms in Nkandla.

Three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"A 12-hour operation commenced on Thursday evening by members of the SA Police Service and the Pietermaritzburg crime intelligence unit and they recovered six unlicensed firearms," Captain Thulani Zwane said.

One of the men was found in possession of three different firearms and ammunition.

Police also recovered a double-barrel shotgun, with the serial number removed, and four shotgun rounds, at a nearby homestead. The firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to establish whether they were used to commit crime in the province.

The men, aged between 25 and 42, were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and were expected to appear in Ekombe Magistrate's Court soon.
