Vavi was given a rousing welcome at Numsa's special national congress.

Suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi was given a rousing welcome at Numsa's special national congress on Wednesday.

Delegates wearing yellow T-shirts cheered when Vavi walked into the conference centre in Boksburg, on the East Rand.

"How could you fire our general secretary? You did it because you hate him," they sang in Zulu. Delegates danced and blew whistles. The Congress of SA Trade Unions put Vavi on special leave after he admitted to having an affair with a junior employee in the trade union federation's offices. The National Union of Metalworkers of SA, an ally of Vavi, has brought a court application against Cosatu over the suspension. It has also been critical of Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini, accusing him of delaying the holding of a special Cosatu congress. Nine of Cosatu's 19 affiliates have written to the federation asking for a special congress. In September, Dlamini said Vavi did not feature among their reasons for asking for the special congress. On Wednesday, Numsa treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo told delegates to keep pushing for a Cosatu special congress.

"The first quarter of next year we want a special congress of Cosatu," he said.

"We only elected one GS [general secretary] of the federation."
