Thousands of funeral guests chatted warmly among themselves at the domed arena where the funeral service for former president Nelson Mandela.

Thousands of funeral guests chatted warmly among themselves at the domed arena where the funeral service for former president Nelson Mandela was held in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday.

With only 450 selected guests able to proceed to the cemetery, the rest remained behind and watched the burial on large screens. The footage stopped before Mandela's coffin was lowered into the grave, at the request of the Mandela family.

Guests at the arena used the time to reconnect and chat as lunch was served.

Mandela was buried at the family's plot in his boyhood village. His burial marks the end of 10 days of national mourning since his death at his home in

Houghton, Johannesburg, on December 5, at the age of 95.
