Technicians have been deployed to Majakaneng, near Mooinooi on Thursday to resolve the water problems in the area, the office of North West premier, Supra Mahumapelo said.

"Earlier in the morning, we heard they were already on their way there," said the premier's spokesman, Sam Mokaila.

The intervention follows several days of violent protests with community members demanding water and electricity.

Protesters have been demanding water for years.

During water protests last year, one community member said their taps had been dry since 2005.

When the unrest started again on Monday, protesters looted two foreign-owned shops and set alight a bus.

Protesters barricaded parts of the N4 with gates, stones, trees and burning tyres.

Seven people were arrested and would face charges including public violence and malicious damage to property.

While police spokesman, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane could not be reached for comment, Mokaila said it seemed the situation was under control on Thursday morning.

"The situation, as we get it from the municipality, is that things are still tense but there have been no reported incidents," said Mokaila.
