The Western Cape is on high alert for heavy rainfall at the weekend.

The Western Cape is on high alert for heavy rainfall at the weekend, disaster management centre director Schalk Carstens said on Friday.

"All district and the city disaster management centres remain on high alert and will be activated should the need arise," he said.

"We are in contact and supporting our counterparts in the province and contingency plans are in place."

The SA Weather Service said heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding was expected on Friday night and Saturday.

The areas at risk were the southern parts of the West Coast, western parts of the central Karoo, the Cape Metropole, Overberg, Cape Winelands and Eden districts.

Gale-force winds, with speeds of up to 70km/h, were expected between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas and off-shore areas of the south coast.

Carstens said the National Sea Rescue Institute would also be on standby.
