We chat to Quince Cooks from The Ultimate Braai Master

Last night viewers witnessed how team Quince Cook was eliminated in the second episode of the second season of this popular outdoor cooking competition on SABC3.

With a dream of opening a seafood deli in their neighbourhood, Quenten and Sandra Alberts from Observatory, Cape Town, had their eyes set firmly on the cash prize of R500 000 which is up for grabs in The Ultimate Braai Master: The Roads Less Travelled.

But last night viewers witnessed how team Quince Cook was eliminated in the second episode of the second season of this popular outdoor cooking competition on SABC3.

“Yes, we were very disappointed as we were hoping to make it to the top ten,” says Quince Cook braai master Quenten (46).

“We are not going to lie about this!” He explains their nerves took over and they panicked. “We made the wrong decisions when choosing what dishes to prepare.”

This husband-and-wife team entered the competition because they saw it as an opportunity to tour our beautiful country and see places they’d never seen before.

“But we also met amazing people on set and we hope that we will be friends for life,” says Sandy (47), a professional caterer.

For her the highlight was the game drive at Hluhluwe Game Park. “Best Mother’s Day ever!” she said. For Quenten, a commercial fisherman, it was catching a yellow-fin tuna at Sodwana Bay, as well as the underwater diving on a coral reef.

At weekends you’ll find them outside braaiing with family and friends and on the grid will be Quenten’s favourite piece of meat: a rump steak. “Because of the flavour, tenderness and right amount of fat-to-meat ratio,” he says.

Sandy says the best compliment for them is when they see their guests licking their fingers!

We asked team Quince Cook (QC) a few questions:

Q: What is the funniest thing that happened to you on The Ultimate Braai Master?

QC: The morning after we arrived at Hluhluwe Game Reserve we had to film a promotional advert for the Renault Koleos. The teams were briefed by a director whose first words were, “Today we’re going to shoot . . .”

His words were quickly interrupted by Thabiso, from the Darkies Unleashed team, who said, “Shoot? What are we going to shoot?”

Suddenly realising we were standing in the middle of a game reserve, the director quickly changed his choice of words!

Q: What was your biggest fear during the competition?

QC: Being the first team to be eliminated.

Q: What was the most extreme challenge?

QC: The elimination challenge was intense. The pressure was on us all to complete our dishes in the allocated time and to impress the judges so we could stay in the competition.

Q: Which outdoor environment was your favourite during filming?

QC: Sodwana Bay, because it has the most beautiful white beaches, warm sea water, amazing coral reef and beautiful marine life. We’d wake up in the morning to hear the waves rolling in to shore ? definitely want to visit again if we get the opportunity!

Q: Which team was your toughest competition?

QC: The West Coast Bro’s. They have good culinary skills and work well together under pressure.

Q: Why do you like to braai?

QC: The smoke from the braai, the smell of food cooking and warmth from the fire brings people together – hence the gees.
