‘Why did they have to kill them?’

Robbed, brutally beaten and mercilessly drowned as their sexually violated partners watched on. A sister of one of the victims speaks to us about her family’s tragic loss.

It started out as a leisurely Saturday afternoon stroll in Joburg Park, but would soon end in something more sinister for two couples.

When high-school teacher and rugby coach Zukisa Kela (25) and his fiancée Jabu Mbatha invited their friend Sizwe Tyeke (33) and his wife Asange to join them at Rhodes Park in Kensington, Joburg, after their afternoon church service, no one envisioned that it would end up in tragedy.

The two couples were approached by a group of 12 armed men, who forced them to lie on the groud, face down, before proceeding to rob them of their cellphones and wallets. The two men were then brutally assaulted, bound and drowned in the park’s lake.
