“You'll appreciate that Mrs Madikizela is a much loved figure in SA"

The much loved Mother of the Nation, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, is spending her third day in hospital.

While family spokesperson, Victor Dlamini, says it’s just a routine check-up, messages of hope and encouragement have been pouring in from concerned South Africans.

She was admitted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday and has stayed there longer than expected but her family says there is no need for concern.

Dlamini tells DRUM that they decided to make a public announcement in the interest of transparency.

“It’s natural for high profile people to announce if they are traveling or in this case that they're going for a medical check-up,” he says.

“You'll appreciate that Mrs Madikizela is a much loved figure in SA and the public always wants to know how she's doing.”

Dlamini admits that she often goes to the hospital for regular check-ups and this one is no different from others. “I visited her in hospital and she is fine and in high spirits. If she stays over at the hospital it will be because she is taking the chance to get some much needed rest, given her demanding schedule,” he adds.
