Witchcraft on Isibaya

We’re used to seeing him in a suit as a professional business man

or a respected taxi boss. But Siyabonga Twala’s latest role on Isibaya is putting his acting skills to the test. The actor has put the suits aside and taken on the role of umkhovu (zombie), moving frantically on command like a well-trained animal.

This is all part of Isibaya’s riveting story line centred on ‘ukuthwebula’ (witchcraft).  “We consulted Nyangas and Sangomas in KZN and in Johannesburg about the process of creating an umkhovu,” says Isibaya publicist Bongiwe Potelwa. “We reflected on people who abuse the powers of muthi and spirituality, on the power of good versus evil, about greed and what lengths people will go to feed their greed.”

“At its core, it is a story about good versus evil,” says Bongi. “We believe that in the end good triumphs evil, so viewers need to stay tuned to see how that happens. How will our lost hero Mpiyakhe Zungu and his family defeat the powers of evil?”
