A group of 150 students resumed the #FeesMustFall protest on campus on Monday afternoon at The University of Witwatersrand.

In a statement, Wits University management said students acted unlawfully after it was reported that some students started a fire in an empty lecture theatre.

“The University is documenting all unlawful incidents and we are asking students and staff who may have witnessed or been subjected to such unlawful conduct to report these incidents to Campus Control,” it says.

Wits University has suspended 5 students and those who are non-Wits students who were involved in the incident would be identified and barred from entering their campus.

In response to the incident Wits University says they have beefed up their security by enforcing strict access control with students and staff required to produce access cards when entering campus.

Visitors will have to sign in via security

Additional security guards have also been placed on campus and are expected to remain there until further notice.

Wits management says the South African Police Service have also been contacted to be on standby should any more disruptions occur.

The SAPS is currently investigate the incident of arson.
