Controversial University of Witwatersrand Student Representative Council (SRC) President Mcebo Dlamini has been removed as the head of the organisation.

Business Day reports that this follows incidents of controversial incidents including an assault on a senior staff member at the university.

According to the daily, Dlamini has been fired from his position and has a received a year's suspended sentence of academic exclusion.

Vice Chancellor of Wits Adam Habib has reportedly condemned Dlamini's behaviour.

"As someone who claims to love this insititution, I believe Mr Dlamini has single-handedly wrought more damage on its [Wits's] reputation than any other person who I can think of in at least the past two decades," Habib said as quoted by the paper.

Dlamini's recent "I love Hitler" Facebook post caused a stir but the former leader defended his stance which Habib reportedly called "racist to the extreme".

It is reportedly still being decided as to whether the university will take legal action against Dlamini for his post.

Dlamini could not be reached for comment.
