A Hawaiian woman was told to shorten her name because it wouldn't fit on an ID card.

Janice Lokelani Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele was furious after state officials told her to cut down her 36-letter moniker, but she has blasted them as being "disrespectful of the Hawaiian people".

She told Honolulu television station KHON2: "The county has never accommodated my name on my driver's licence."

Janice was not keen to shorten her last name because she wants to keep it at its normal length as a tribute to her late husband.

The Department of Transport has now agreed to extend the ID cards to a 40-character limit.
