Women in South Africa live in constant fear of being violently attacked, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Thursday.

"We are always scared of being attacked at any time. If you drive at night the first thing you think about is not only being hijacked... being raped and killed," she said during a The New Age Business Briefing.

"It is a very unpleasant environment, you [also] worry about your girls," Motshekga said.

She was participating in a panel discussion on gender violence, screened on SABC2.
