Phumzile wasn’t sure about her next move.

She was looking for something more secure. besides, she was starting to drink far too much.

As time went by, she started dating Thomas. He was a good man, but her heart was not really in the relationship. He could sense it. One day he gave her an ultimatum: marriage, or else he would move on. Thomas was desperate to settle down and start a family. She relented. They got engaged in June, and Doreen asked her if she was sure this was what she wanted. “Yes,” Phumzile told her, but their friendship was never quite the same after that. They planned the wedding for the following year. Thomas was thrilled: he wanted a huge, lavish affair with all his family and friends in attendance.

Phumzile was not excited about the whole idea. “We better book the venue,” Thomas said to her one evening. When she said nothing, he put his arm around her. “I’m not Moses, sweetheart. You know I’ll never treat you badly.” “I know,” she murmured. “It’s okay. You book the venue. I don’t know what is wrong with me.”

Her eyes were glistening with tears, and Thomas moved swiftly towards her and kissed them. “He’ll make a wonderful husband,” her mother told her. “You’re not getting any younger, Phumzile.” Trust her mother to put it like that. As for Doreen, she had disappeared out of Phumzile’s life, and Phumzile missed their chats.

Doreen felt as if Phumzile had let her down by agreeing to marry Thomas. She also felt Thomas wasn’t the right man for her, and she was beginning to see how right she was.
