“She was my prayer warrior,” says Zanele

TV HOST, author and founder of the Crown Gospel Awards, Zanele Mbokazi, says she’s left devastated by the passing of her ailing mother.

Magdalene Mbokazi (73), who was affectionately known as MaHarris, passed away on Tuesday morning (24 February) at her home in Durban after a long battle with brain cancer.

“We saw her changing in front of our eyes – from being an active woman to someone confined to a wheelchair. Mother’s Day would come and go, and we would wish to do something with her but she couldn’t. My sister, Kitty, and I are comforted by the knowledge that she could see and feel that we tried,” says an emotional Zanele.

Zanele was at the Department of Arts and Culture in Pretoria where she’s a special projects manager when her sister called to give her the bad news.

Speaking from her family home in Durban, Zanele says she knew this day would come. “I thought I was strong and ready, but I’m not. In her last months, we knew we could not do much. All we did everyday was to sit next to her and sing her favourite hymns. She was my prayer warrior, my submarine.”

MaHarris is survived by her daughters Zanele and Kitty, 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral details are still being finalised.
