Zonke on her greatest gift

Its only a few weeks before her bundle of joy arrives, but singer and songwriter Zonke Dikana just can’t wait to hold her baby in her arms.

“I’m so excited I can’t tell you. I have wanted another baby so much,” gushes the 31-year-old, who certainly hasn’t let the pregnancy keep her from doing her thing. Her new album, Ina Ethe, has been critically acclaimed and she has continued to perform around the country, including at this year’s Metro Awards.

But it’s her new arrival that dominates the conversation when we meet at a restaurant in Dainfern, north of Joburg. Her tell-tale bump is clear to see as she’s dressed in black leggings and a tight brown top.

Zonke says she was over the moon when she found out she was pregnant, as was her partner, Tumi Mokoena, who’s a lawyer and her manager.

“It’s always been on the cards for me to have another baby but, being an artist, it’s not that easy to have a family.”

“I’m not taking a break any time soon – this baby will pop out on stage,” she chuckles. “But on a serious note, I am slowing down now and I choose which performances to do.”

Their families were also overjoyed about the news of the pregnancy, but someone who wasn’t so chuffed wasZonke’s daughter, Milani.

She recently returned from the United States where she lived for two years with her American father.

The 10-year-old couldn’t understand why her mother decided to have someone else take her place as the baby in the family;she has always been the only child.

“She wasn’t so happy at first, but now she’s been won over and even gives me a foot massage sometimes. That comes at a price, though, because I have to put money in her piggy bank,” she laughs.
