Zuma congratulates Mlambo-Ngcuka on her UN appointment

President Jacob Zuma has expressed his congratulatory message to former Deputy President of the Republic, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Mlambo-Ngcuka was appointed the Executive Director of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, or UN Women. She is no stranger to high profile positions as she was South Africa's first woman deputy president from 2005 to 2008. She succeeds Michelle Bachelet who was the first female president of Chile. “On behalf ofgovernment and the people of South Africa, we congratulate the former Deputy President on this crucial appointment.

It is a true measure of recognition not only of her contribution to the advancement of women in South Africa, but also an acknowledgement of the considerably influential and progressive role that South Africa and its people continue to play in the global affairs.

We wish her all the best in this challenging task,” said President Jacob Zuma.
