President Jacob Zuma will meet former world chess champion Gary Kasparov at his official Pretoria residence, the presidency said on Thursday.

Kasparov, president of the Kasparov Chess Foundation, would meet Zuma briefly on Friday, spokesman Bongani Majola said.

"It is a courtesy visit."

On Kasparov's last visit to South Africa in 2011, his foundation collaborated with Pretoria-based chess educational project Moves for Life to launch the African chapter of his chess foundation.

Zuma is the patron of Moves for Life.

The Moves for Life programme was launched by Zuma in 2010 and had since expanded to over 50 schools around the country, Moves for Life said on its website.

It said this had resulted in measurable improvement in maths and science performance among children.
