One may argue that South Africa’s favourite public holiday is Heritage Day. Besides the day being a celebration of the many diverse cultures and languages our country boasts of- the day has also been dubbed ‘Braai Day’ by South Africans where one can enjoy overindulging in braai meat without being judged or feeling bad about it.

What better way can there be to celebrate this beautiful day other than visiting a Shisanyama- a braai spot which deals with authentic South African dishes? These three Braai Spots are the place to be this Heritage Weekend.

1)      Imbizo Shisanyama Busy Corner (Gauteng)

Located in one of Gauteng’s biggest townships, Tembisa, the original African BraaiMix is hugely popular with customers and consists of boerewors, lamb chops, chicken wings and short ribs served with sides of chakalaka, salsa, pap and spinach. Some of South Africa’s most popular musical artists perform live at this venue, so be sure to check out their calendar. This Shisanyama has gained a very good reputation by winning the NSBC Small Business Champion Award in 2013 and by being selected as the Top 5 finalst in the 2015 South African Small Medium Micro Enterprise (SMME) awards.

2)      Mzoli’s (Cape Town)

Nicknamed ‘Gugulethu’s Church of Meat’, this popular Cape Town hangout is one that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. With a very laidback and informal setup of plastic chairs and tables outside , Mzoli’s attracts people of different classes and cultures to the township. The house music that blasts through the speakers sets the perfect mood to enjoy the saucy braai meat while downing a couple of beers with friends and tourists.

3)      Eyadini (Durban)

Best known for hosting events for the elite and prominent, Eyadini lounge and Shisanyama offers one of the best braai meat and pap dishes. If you are in the mood for dressing up and going out this Heritage Weekend, Eyadini is the place to be. It is also where the controversial Entertainer, Zodwa WaBantu was discovered for her sultry dance moves. The resident photographers will be sure to capture you having a good time.
