Voting is a hard-won right. Many people sacrificed their lives so we could all choose our government democratically. For the first time we were able to vote Apartheid into the dustbin of history 20 years ago. How great that moment was!
Why it's dumb to spoil your ballot
The least we can do to respect those who sacrificed so much in bringing us Democracy is to respect our right to vote. And spoiling your ballot is an act of Disrespect towards those who actively fought against apartheid.
Madiba understood our need for the democratic vote. He himself told us to vote the ANC out of office if they became corrupt criminals like the apartheid government was.
He did NOT advocate spoiling votes. He would never have supported such a negative, cowardly, non-action. He was, after all, an Activist. Spoiling your ballot is no different to the cowardice of whites who stood by and refused to act against apartheid, even though they knew it was wrong.
Now, I ask you to think about your vote metaphorically: Imagine that your government was a car... a vehicle that transports you daily towards a future.
Every 5 years you are offered the choice of a brand new car, although the range of options is limited to a few brands. What will you choose?
- Will you fold your arms, like a sullen teenager and say "I want none of them because I don't like any of them!"
- Or will you stubbornly insist on sticking with your old skorokoro because you have driven it for the past 20 years, even though gears of progress keep grinding because the brakes keep failing to prevent corruption of the engine?
- Or will you choose to try out a new model, knowing that if it fails to perform you can choose another car in 5 years time?
Our chance to chose a new government comes around every 5 years. That's a very short period of time. If your child is born today and the new government wrecks schooling even more than it is presently wrecked, you can vote for a better model before your child even goes to school.
If the new car doesn't perform in 5 years time you can choose another . Or you can step back, spoil your ballot, and allow less than half the voters to select another skorokoro on your behalf (and on behalf of your children!)
There are over 23 million people registered to vote. The ANC only won the majority by 11 million votes last time round ... less than half. Polls suggest they will have way less than 11 million votes this time round.
However, if millions spoil their ballots the ANC will win again by a 'large majority' of less than 10 million.
So, unless you want the ANC to win, its dumb to spoil your ballot. Even your children and grandchildren can understand that logic. And they don't even HAVE the vote. You do.
So vote for them, your children, even if you cannot bring yourself to vote for your self.

Your 2014 Election Summary
Smaller parties, notably, took a beating. AGANG never made it to the start and COPE became a footnote. The IFP's support was halved, a prime reason being the NFP (IFP rebels), entering the KZN political arena.
