Johannesburg - A Facebook account purporting to be that of ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte is false and should be ignored, the African National Congress said on Monday.

Spokesperson Jackson Mthembu distanced the party and Duarte from the false promises made in her name on the fake account.

"This pseudo account has been used to mislead the public and it makes promises about giving money to unsuspecting users."

Anyone who came across such messages should report them, he said.

"The ANC will never make false promises about monies that will not be paid."

The ANC had approached Facebook regarding the false account, Mthembu said.

The party apologised for any inconvenience the fake account may have caused.
