ANC will never be defeated - Mashatile

2014-02-22 14:30
Johannesburg - The ANC will never be defeated by another political party, Gauteng chairperson Paul Mashatile said on Saturday.

"The ANC won't be threatened by parties born yesterday," Mashatile told supporters at an ANC Youth League election festival in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg.

"The ANC is here to stay... it's been here for 100 years and will continue to be here."

He urged young people to mobilise fellow residents and go vote for the African National Congress.

Earlier, ANC leaders enjoyed themselves dancing before addressing the festival at the Makhulong stadium.

Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who were both former ANC Youth League leaders, Mashatile, former youth league treasurer Pule Mabe and Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele danced with musician Zahara as she performed on stage.

The crowd sang along to her popular song "Mandela" which pays tribute to former president Nelson Mandela, who died in December.

People continued to arrive at the stadium, filling the venue.

The stadium was just a kilometre away from the Mahlareng stadium where expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's party Economic Freedom Fighters was scheduled to launch its election manifesto.

Tembisa was turned into a sea of yellow and red as members of the two parties made their way to their respective venues in cars, buses and on foot.

Yellow ANC t-shirts and water were distributed to people seated inside the stadium.

The party's bikers club and a Mini Cooper brigade roared into the stadium, which resulted in ululations from people in the streets and houses across from the venue.

Police closed off routes near Makhulong, and only pedestrians were allowed through.

Hawkers lined the streets, selling food and African National Congress memorabilia.
