ANC wins 3 of 5 wards in KZN by-elections

Johannesburg - The ANC has won three of the five wards contested in municipal by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal, according to results released by the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) on Thursday.

The Inkatha Freedom Party and its breakaway, the National Freedom Party, won one ward each in Wednesday's polls.

The African National Congress retained Ward three in Vulamehlo (Dududu), Ward four in Umtshezi (Estcourt), and Ward 22 in Abaqulusi (Vryheid).

The IFP retained Ward 39 in the eThekwini metro, while the NFP held onto Ward four in Nongoma.

In Ward 39 in eThekwini, IFP candidate Bongumusa Zondo won 2984 votes (58.09%) out of 5 137 valid votes cast. There were 31 spoilt ballots.

In Dududu, ANC candidate Ayanda Ndlovu won 1 673 votes (81.10%) out of 2 063 valid votes.

The IEC recorded 28 spoilt ballots in this by-election.

In Estcourt, the ruling party candidate Ugandren Chetty secured 1 005 votes (53.51%) of the 1 878 valid votes cast. Twenty ballots were spoilt.

In Vryheid, ANC member Bheka Mtshali took 1 020 votes (67.02%) of 1 522 valid votes.

There were 28 spoilt ballots.

In Nongoma, NFP candidate Zangalakhe Ntuli won with 1 811 votes (61.66%) of the 2 937 valid votes. There were 27 spoilt ballots in this ward.
