DA: No jobs for most Gauteng youth

Johannesburg - 65% of young people in Gauteng will not find jobs after finishing school, DA Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane said on Wednesday.

"Twenty years later we can't say we have a good story to tell because people don't have jobs," Maimane told supporters in Johannesburg during a Democratic Alliance march for jobs.

"President Jacob Zuma's cows have a better story to tell."

Maimane called on people to vote for the DA as its policies did not undermine job creation.

"The ANC has failed people on the delivery of jobs. Jobs cannot be for the people who are connected to the ANC," he said.

Maimane told supporters that small, innovative businesses would pay R1 for rent a year under the DA in Gauteng, to help create jobs. The government owned half of the buildings in the province.

"We want to make sure that small businesses can thrive," he said.

There would be a programme to recoup the costs. The big hindrance for small business owners was finding business space, he said.

Maimane said the DA would give people title deeds and houses.

"When we talk about freedom, we talk about people owning houses and land. Freedom means you own your own house."

Maimane promised DA supporters that the party would provide the best quality health care system and use fuel levies, instead of e-tolls, to improve roads.

The DA would govern the province after the elections because the people of Gauteng were concerned about unemployment, e-tolls, and corruption, he said.

"We feel strong, South Africa is ready for change."

The party's polls showed that the ANC's support was below 50 percent.

"We are a diverse party that is growing...we want to govern Gauteng, there is no talk of a coalition."

The party intended ending cadre deployment if it governed the province.

As hundreds of DA supporters marched, they sang: "We have been voting for the ANC, it doesn't work for us. It is better to vote for the DA because it works."
