DA wins Thaba Chweu ward in by-election

Johannesburg - The DA has won Ward 12 in Thaba Chweu during municipal by-elections in Mpumalanga on Wednesday, the party said.

Democratic Alliance's MPL Anthony Benadie said the party beat the ANC with a margin of over 87.6% of votes.

The ward became vacant after DA councillor Sonja Boshoff was nominated to represent Mpumalanga at the National Council of Provinces.

Nicko Janse van Vuuren was elected as the ward's next councillor.

"The DA extends its most sincere thanks to each and every voter who came out to cast their votes today, and we are humbled by the confidence that residents hold in our abilities to hold the Thaba Chweu municipality to account," Benadie said.

He said the number of votes indicated that the party was increasingly becoming the party of choice for South Africans.

The Independent Electoral Commission said by-elections were held in six provinces on Wednesday.
