Durban - Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, the leader of the National Freedom Party (NFP), will be stepping down as Zululand District Municipality's mayor after 15 years at the helm, a senior party official said on Tuesday.

NFP party secretary Nhlanhla Khubisa said that kaMagwaza-Msibi would be leading the party in Parliament when it convenes on 21 May.

The NFP garnered six seats in the national assembly following the 7 May general election.

"She is taking a seat in Parliament. As the face of the party during the election [campaign] she must lead it in Parliament," he said.

He said that kaMagwaza-Msibi had been a councillor for 19 years, 15 of which she served as mayor of the Zululand District Municipality.

The NFP was formed three months before the May 2011 local government elections, when kaMagwaza-Msibi, who was the chairperson of the IFP, broke away.
