National Assembly term ends at midnight

2014-05-06 19:59

Johannesburg- The fourth term of the National Assembly ends at midnight, Parliament said on Tuesday.

The results of Wednesday's general election, expected by the end of the week, would show which parties drew enough votes to secure representation in the assembly and the extent of their representation, it said in a statement.

The names of National Assembly members-elect were expected to be finalised by next week.

The National Assembly and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) first sittings would be held on 21 and 22 May, respectively.

At its first sitting, members of the National Assembly would elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, as well as the president.

At the first sitting of the NCOP, permanent delegates would elect the NCOP chair, two deputy chairs and other presiding officers.

"To fit in with the first sittings of the two Houses of Parliament, the first sittings of provincial legislatures are all anticipated to take place at 10:30 on Wednesday, 21 May," Parliament said.

The provincial legislatures would appoint permanent delegates to the NCOP, as well as elect their premiers and provincial speakers.

"Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, or a judge designated by him, calls the first sittings of both the National Assembly and the NCOP and presides over the election of the National Assembly Speaker, the president of the republic and the NCOP chairperson."
