Professor in Political Science at University of Johannesburg

Since April 2013, Professor Cheryl Hendricks has been lecturing on Political Science at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Her substantive knowledge areas are Conflict Management and Peacebuilding; Gender, Peace and Security; Security Sector Reform/Security Sector Governance; Human Security; Regional Security Architectures [SADC]); Governance, Democracy and Development; Reform of UNSC, South African Foreign Policy; Theories of International Relations.

Prior to UJ, she was with the Institute for Security Studies as Programme Head for the Southern Africa Human Security Programme and as a Senior Research Fellow. Prior to these positions, Professor Hendricks was an Academic Manager at the Centre for Conflict Resolution and a Lecturer in Politics at the University of the Western Cape.

She currently acts as the lead for the SADC Gender Protocol Alliance’s Gender, Peace and Security Cluster. In addition she has worked extensively on the Women’s Leadership for Peace and Security in the Greater Horn of Africa project, co-ordinated by the Club of Madrid. She is also part of a think tank on Gender Peace and Security in Africa.
