Vote ANC, SABC chairperson says

2014-03-24 11:57

Cape Town - SABC chairperson Ellen Tshabalala, who is supposed to be apolitical in public, has been heard asking South Africans to vote for the ANC.

Tshabalala was speaking at the handover of houses in KwaMashu north of Durban.

She told residents that “there are too many political parties”, said that the multiple political parties registered for the May general elections are “confusing” and that “the government knows where it is going”.

Tshabalala told residents to vote for the ANC party and not any of the opposition parties.

In 2012, board member Cedric Gina appeared on SABC News wearing an ANC shirt at a news conference.

SABC board members, journalists and personnel - although they might have personal views on topics and party political preferences – are not allowed to speak out publicly or canvass for votes for any specific political party.

A month after the results of a scathing PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report into the shocking lack of skills and qualifications at the SABC, as well as a damning report from Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on abuse of power and maladministration at the SABC, Tshabalala’s board has not made public any actions or direct interventions which have been taken following those reports.

Madonsela’s report said acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng was guilty of abuse of power and maladministration as well as lying about having a matric certificate and making up matric certificate symbols. Tshabalala’s board has still not suspended him.

On Monday morning the SABC didn't respond to a media enquiry asking if it is still company policy that members of its board, SABC personnel and executives be apolitical publicly about political party affiliations and not be seen publicly doing political canvassing.
