ANC Gauteng welcomes IEC's dismissal of complaint

Johannesburg – The ANC in Gauteng on Saturday welcomed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)'s dismissal of a complaint by the DA that Johannesburg's mayor Parks Tau misused state funding to punt himself as a mayoral candidate for Wednesday's municipal elections.

"Mayor Tau's indisputable record of service delivery for the people of Johannesburg in the past five years is obviously too much for the DA to handle," the party said in a statement.

The DA's complaint was apparently over Tau's advertisements of the City’s milestones and achievements which began in March with the tagline "Clearly, the City of Johannesburg is in good hands".

Democratic Alliance mayoral candidate for the city Herman Mashaba laid the complaint on July 8, saying the radio advertisement was "excessive and gratiuitous" and focused on the individual achievements of Tau, who is running on an ANC ticket.

"Their foolish attempt to equate their weak candidate with Mayor Tau has failed and thus they resort to desperate cheap measures," the party said.

"Not only has Mayor Tau and his administration improved the lives of the people of Johannesburg, they have also improved the financial standing of the City. This has improved investor confidence, and has been recognized by global ratings agencies such as the Fitch Rating Agency and Moody's Investors Service."

The battle between the ANC and the DA in the city is expected to be a close call, according to Ipsos marketing surveys commissioned by eNCA.

Ipsos's latest numbers put the DA ahead of the ANC by four points with 36% of people saying they would vote for the party in the City of Johannesburg. Newcomers to municipal elections came in at 9%.

The DA and ANC are holding their last big rallies this weekend and the gloves have been coming off, with tit-for-tat insults flying between the two.
