Port Elizabeth - Preliminary results from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro show that the African National Congress has made significant inroads, the party said just hours before the final results were to be released.
ANC provincial chairperson Phumulo Masualle said preliminary data from its party agents showed that it had won 36 wards in the metro and expected to win more as the process unfolded.
"The current 36 wards we have won exhibit growth in the number of wards won by the ANC in the metro. It's a jump from 34 wards we won in the last local government elections," he said.
The ANC applauded itself for its win of two traditional Democratic Alliance wards in the Buffalo City Metro (BCM).
"The ANC continues to take over wards that previously belonged to the DA, like Ward 3 and 10 in the BCM, and a number of wards in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro."
The DA's early calling of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro results is nothing but an act of desperation, Masualle added.
