Pretoria – An ANC member and party agent in KwaZulu-Natal has died after he collapsed encouraging people to register to vote at a voting station there, the party said on Sunday.
Sabelo Ngcobo died at a local clinic after complaining about pains before collapsing.
“The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal extends its deepest condolences to the family of Cde Sabelo Ngcobo who passed away yesterday (Saturday), while assisting voters as a party agent at Mvamazi voting district in Mfolozi on the North Coast,” ANCKZN secretary, Super Zuma, said in a statement.
“As the province of KwaZulu-Natal, we have lost an activist and a dedicated cadre of our movement who died with his boots on serving our movement and entrenching our democracy.”
Zuma said as an honour to Ngcobo, South Africans who had not yet registered to vote and those who had not yet updated their status should do so by turning out in numbers to register and update their address details.
“This is a befitting honour that we can bestow on our fallen hero. He died serving our democracy and encouraging citizens to exercise their hard earned right to vote. We must pick up his spear and continue to advance the noble course of our revolution. May his soul rest in peace,” said Zuma.
ANC Musa Dladla region secretary, Tholi Gwala, said Ngcobo said he was not well when he got to the voting station before collapsing. He said they were not sure of what led to his death.
“We are still waiting for the post-mortem results. He just said he was not feeling well when he got to the station and collapsed,” said Dladla.
