Cape Town – Preparations for the local government elections has cost the African National Congress over R1bn.

READ: ANC won't give up people of Mandela Bay - Mbete

The party has been out in force with appearances by deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, former president Kgalema Motlanthe and chairperson Baleka Mbete, among others.

The ANC has also faced opposition to it candidate lists.

Spokesperson Zizi Kodwa criticised opposition to the nomination lists as factionalism.

“People are becoming members of members and are prepared to die for the member, and they are not prepared to die for the organisation,” Kodwa said recently.

The ANC is determined to win Johannesburg – one of the metros where polling indicates a tight race.

An Ipsos poll recently showed that both the opposition Democratic Alliance has a thin 36% to 31% lead over the ANC.
