Pretoria - Police engaged in running battles with looters in Mabopane on Thursday night.
Officers encircled the Central City Mall and fired rubber bullets to repel advancing looters.
Shortly after 20:00, a group of officers entered the mall in an effort to drive out people who had broken the fences.
This was the second night in which police clashed with protesters.
On Thursday morning, the bodies of two men were discovered, one in a passageway and the other in the garden of a house adjacent to the mall.
Residents went on the rampage on Monday, in protest against the nomination of Thoko Didiza as the ANC's mayoral candidate in Tshwane.
Residents and party members want incumbent mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to continue leading the city after the August 3 local government elections.
