DA launches Mashaba for mayor campaign in Johannesburg

Cape Town - Herman Mashaba, the DA's mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, will throw himself at the mercy of the twitterati in a Q&A session on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

This is after Mashaba officially launched his campaign in Alexandra, Johannesburg on Saturday, with a list of promises.

The businessman co-founder of the hair product range ''Black Like Me'' is hoping to be the candidate who will swing votes away from the majority African National Congress in the city.

He said he entered that race for mayor because he has personal experience of how opportunity can change a life, according to excerpts of his speech on the party's website.

Mashaba said his sisters raised him in poor circumstances and on a trip back to his roots with DA leader Mmusi Maimane he felt that very little had changed in the area.

He feels Johannesburg's progress has stalled.

The party's vision, he said, is to create hundreds of thousands of jobs around the city and make the city work efficiently.

His promises include:

- Focusing on small business;
- Removing old by laws obstructing business growth within 100 days of being elected;
- City-owned land and buildings would be audited, and the party would identify affordable commercial spaces for small businesses, artisans, and shops, at affordable rentals;
- Large tenders would be divided into small contracts so that more business can bid for them successfully;
- Unnecessary consultants would be cut out to save millions;
- Big companies will be partnered with smaller businesses that want to grow, in a growth mentoring programme;
- Telephones will be answered swiftly and courteously and exceptional performance will be awarded;
- Projects will be monitored in real time to make sure they are not stopped half way;
- Criminal charges against corrupt Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers will be pursued;
- Early learning day care centres in every township;
- ''Ghost cars'' will help predict and prevent crime;
- Thousands of people, starting with the poor, will get title deeds to their homes;
- Proper sports facilities will be built;
- A one ticket system for public transport.

Mashaba's Twitter town hall will be held between 13:00 and 14:00 on Monday.
