EFF might lead coalition government in Rustenburg - Shivambu

2016-08-04 19:28
Floyd Shivambu (Amanda Khoza, News24)

Pretoria – Economic Freedom Fighters deputy president Floyd Shivambu says there is a possibility that the Rustenburg municipality could be governed by a coalition led by his party.

"There is no decisive winner in Rustenburg and there is likely to be a coalition government which might be led by the EFF. Who knows?" Shivambu said.

"In Rustenburg, I think we have 23%. There is no decisive winner in Rustenburg."

The municipality looks to be closely contested, with the African National Congress at 46.13%, followed by EFF on 25.01% and the Democratic Alliance on 19.34%. Votes at 58% of the stations had been counted.

If the trend continues, the likelihood of a coalition government would gain traction, with minor parties in the area holding the sway votes to determine who controls the municipality.

Shivambu said they had not yet spoken to the other parties about working together, but that it was a possibility.

He thanked South Africans for trusting the party with their future and said they had proved to be an organisation that would be in the political arena for a long time.

"We have not had any discussions about coalitions. We are very happy that a number of people have voted for the EFF and we are growing. Most organisations that came to exist post-1994, they struggle a lot at local government, but the EFF has demonstrated that it’s an organisation that has staying power and will stay forever," he said.
