Pretoria - Political assassinations during the election campaign period were a setback to efforts to consolidate the country's democracy, an NGO said on Thursday.

"The campaign process was generally peaceful, albeit vibrant, however the incidents of violence were due to the increased intra-party competition," Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa's executive director Dennis Kadima said at the IEC's results centre in Pretoria.

He encouraged everyone involved in the elections to ensure political tolerance and to condemn the surge in alleged political assassinations.

Eisa members kept an eye on Wednesday's local government elections. The non-profit organisation observes voting to ensure credible elections across the continent.

Two voters died, apparently of natural causes, while voting in KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape. A youth volunteer collapsed and died shortly after casting his vote in Struisbaai, Western Cape.

The 2016 elections were considered to have been the most competitive, with the highest number of candidates since the introduction of multi-party democracy in 1994.

Kadima said Eisa had been informed about the 28 complaints of alleged violations of the electoral code of conduct the IEC had received since Tuesday.

Overall, the elections took place in a transparent, fair and credible manner, in line with the constitutional and legal framework, he said.
