Free State voters were 'too cold to vote'

Bloemfontein – The cold weather got the blame for the relatively low voter turnout in the Free State.

According to IEC figures, only 44% of voters in the province turn up at voting stations on Wednesday.

“The weather was not conducive to voting,” provincial IEC spokesperson Mmathabo Rasengane told News24. “It was really cold and in places like Zastron (in the eastern Free State) it snowed.”

Rasengane said they had hoped for about 80%, but the trend in the Free State was that local government elections were not well attended.

“The trend is at 44.5%. But we had hoped for better.”

According to the IEC, national voter turnout was 58.28%.

A fast-moving cold front caused low temperatures on election day and rain and strong winds made voting difficult for residents of the Eastern and Western Cape too.
